Trudeau has faced mounting pressure since the resignation of Chrystia Freeland, his finance minister, on December 16.

Justin Trudeau Resignation Latest News Today: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly preparing to resign as leader of the Liberal Party as early as Monday, according to a report by US broadcaster Fox News.

The Globe and Mail also cited anonymous sources within Trudeau's administration, claiming that the announcement is expected this week. The Liberal Party caucus is scheduled to meet on Wednesday amid growing calls for Trudeau to step aside as party leader.

Uncertain Future as Prime Minister

While Trudeau’s potential resignation as Liberal leader is becoming increasingly likely, it remains unclear whether he will also step down as prime minister. If he resigns from the party leadership, a leadership race would be triggered, with the new leader taking over as prime minister.

Mounting Challenges

Trudeau has faced mounting pressure since the resignation of Chrystia Freeland, his finance minister, on December 16. Freeland’s departure was abrupt and accompanied by a public letter criticizing Trudeau’s leadership.

Since then, Trudeau has largely avoided the public eye, spending much of his holiday season at a resort in western Canada. The prime minister has yet to make any public comments regarding his future.

Declining Political Fortunes

Economic stagnation and declining public support have added to Trudeau’s challenges. A recent poll by Nanos Research conducted during the holiday season shows the Conservative Party increasing its lead as Canada heads into an election year.

With the Liberals projected to lose a significant portion of their 153 seats, the party has already launched pre-election advertisements warning voters that the Conservatives might cut social security programs.

A Leadership at a Crossroads

If Trudeau steps down, it will mark the end of a political era for the Liberal Party, which he has led since 2013. As Canada’s prime minister since 2015, Trudeau’s tenure has been marked by significant highs and lows, from championing progressive policies to facing criticism over ethics controversies and economic management.

For now, all eyes are on Trudeau as the nation awaits his decision, which could reshape Canada’s political landscape ahead of the next federal election.
