The bill is currently under consideration of the Hearing Committee A bill to celebrate April as ‘Sikh Heritage Month’ was presented by senator Betsy Johnson in Oregon. Bahadur Singh, Sant Hanuman Singh Khalsa, Navneet Kaur, Dr Jaswinder Kaur and Miss India Oregon Kiran Kaur, represented the Sikh community, and presented the case in front of the Hearing Committee. They answered the queries the Committee had over the issue.

The senator then informed the community that the bill would be further presented in the Senate and then in the House. The bill would be passed after another hearing in front of a House committee, before being presented on the House Floor. If passed, it would then be signed by the Governor before becoming a law. Bahadur Singh informed that an effort in this regard had been going on for s long time now.

The community hoped that the bill would soon be passed. Among other provisions, one significant request by the community is that the ‘Nishaan Sahib’ should be erected besides the State Capital Building, so that the onlookers, residents and tourists notice it and get interested in knowing about the Sikh religion. He requested Sikh Community in other states to make an effort towards getting a similar bill implemented in their states too.
