Japan earthquake today: Tsunami warning issued following series of quakes in western areas

Japan earthquake today news updates: While people were busy celebrating New Year, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 hit north central Japan on Monday. In the meanwhile, Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning along the coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures following a series of strong quakes that shook western areas. 

According to the information, Hokuriku Electric Power stated that it was checking for any irregularities at its nuclear power plants. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a quake in Ishikawa and nearby prefectures with one of them measured at a preliminary magnitude of 7.4.

Japan earthquake Today News Updates: What we know so far

  • NHK TV has warned that torrents of water may reach as high as 5 metres (16.5 feet). It even urged people to flee to high land or a the top of a nearby building as soon as possible.
  • Waves more than 1 metre high have hit the coast of Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture, reported NHK.
  • NHK stated that "All residents must evacuate immediately to higher ground." 
  • South Korea’s meteorological agency stated that sea levels may rise on parts of the east coast following the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Japan.
  • Kansai Electric Power stated that there were currently no abnormalities at its nuclear power plants. However, the company has been monitoring the situation closely.
  • All high-speed trains have stopped in Ishikawa Prefecture following powerful quakes in western Japan. 
  • A huge earthquake and tsunami struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, that caused devastation in towns and triggered nuclear meltdowns in Fukushima.
