Chinese President Xi Jinping Calls for Stronger Regional Cooperation at SCO Meet
Beijing, July 16 – Chinese President Xi Jinping met with foreign ministers and heads of permanent bodies of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Beijing on Tuesday, during the Meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of SCO Member States, ANI reported, citing Chinese state media outlet Xinhua.
President Xi highlighted the organization's two-decade-long journey, emphasizing that the SCO has consistently upheld the “Shanghai Spirit,” evolved into a mature and dynamic regional body, and shown strong vitality.
"China has always prioritized the SCO in its neighborhood diplomacy and is committed to making the organization more substantive and robust—safeguarding regional security and stability, promoting development and prosperity of member states, and building a closer community with a shared future," Xi said, as quoted by Xinhua.
He added that since assuming the rotating presidency in July 2023, China has actively promoted SCO cooperation by organizing activities and encouraging joint efforts among member states to build a more cohesive and prosperous regional bloc.
The 2025 SCO Summit is scheduled to take place later this year in Tianjin, China, and President Xi expressed hope to meet with leaders of other member states at the event to discuss the future course of the organization.
"In the face of a turbulent and changing international landscape, the SCO must stay focused, remain confident, act efficiently, and play a more proactive role in injecting greater stability and positive energy into the world," Xi stated.
Earlier in the day, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Called on President Xi Jinping this morning in Beijing along with my fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apprised President Xi of the recent developments in our bilateral ties. Value the guidance of our leaders in that regard.”
This marks Dr. Jaishankar’s first visit to China in five years, as he attends the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting.
