IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Uttarakhand, Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected

Dehradun, June 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Dehradun has issued a yellow alert for Uttarakhand, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and strong surface winds starting June 16. These weather conditions are expected to persist through June 20.

As of the latest update at 6:00 PM, the yellow alert remains in place for most parts of the state, with the exception of five districts: Haridwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar.

In the past 24 hours, Dehradun recorded the highest rainfall in the state, with 65.2 mm measured at 8:30 AM today.
According to the IMD’s update at 1:30 PM on June 16, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely to occur at most places in Nainital, Champawat, Bageshwar, Uttarkashi, and Rudraprayag districts, and at many places across the remaining districts of Uttarakhand.

The rainfall forecast for June 16 indicates a high probability of rainfall (81–100%) in Pithoragarh, Champawat, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar, suggesting significant precipitation in these regions.
Meanwhile, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, and Rudraprayag are expected to witness rain with a moderate to high probability (61–80%). Districts like Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Dehradun, and Haridwar fall under the moderate probability range of 41–60%.

Public Advisory:
•    Stay indoors; keep windows and doors closed during thunderstorms and lightning.
•    Keep harvested produce (if in the field) at a safe place.
•    Stay away from tall objects that conduct electricity during lightning/thunderstorms.
•    Do not tie animals outdoors during thunderstorms/lightning and keep them in safe shelters.
•    People are advised to avoid activities in open areas and take shelter in safe places or pucca houses during thunderstorms/lightning.
•    Avoid shelter under trees and park vehicles at safe locations/sheltered areas.
•    People in vulnerable areas prone to landslides and waterlogging are advised to remain cautious.
•    Avoid staying near rivulets/streams, and ensure proper drainage channels in fields to prevent waterlogging.
