A 47-year-old farmer, Rajinder Singh, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Moga, police sources said.
His wife, Sarbjit Kaur, told the local police that he had borrowed Rs 4 lakh from the Punjab and Sind Bank branch, Rs 4 lakh from a commission agent and about Rs 80,000 from the Cooperative Bank.
She claimed that her husband had taken these loans for agricultural purposes, but repeated crop failure in the past few years added to his debt burden. He owned 4 acres.
The body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile the police has registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC.
