
Chandigarh: The Punjab state Vigilance
Bureau today arrested the secretary of the Assistant Regional
Transport Authority (ARTA) office, Hoshiarpur, in connection
with a case of bribery, an official spokesperson said.
Piara Singh was sent to a five-day vigilance custody by a
local court, he added.
The vigilance bureau had nabbed ASI Ramesh Chander,
posted at the ARTA office in Hoshiarpur, last month for
accepting a bribe of Rs 1,50,000, the spokesperson said.
During investigation, it came to light that the accused
ARTA secretary was allegedly collecting bribes from
transporters through the ASI, he added.
Both Secretary Piara Singh and ASI Ramesh Chander were
allegedly involved in extortion and bribery, the official
said, adding that a case was registered under the Prevention
of Corruption Act against the secretary.
