I-T Department Investigates ‘Ghost’ Plot Allotments in Mohali
The investigative wing of the Income Tax Department has initiated a probe into the alleged allotment of “ghost” industrial plots by the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) at its industrial estate in Mohali, The Tribune reported.
The suspected scam involves the allocation of industrial plots—worth crores of rupees—at unusually low reserve prices to certain individuals. However, according to the report, these individuals have remained untraceable so far, raising suspicions of the use of fake identities or the possibility that the allottees may not exist.
This has triggered serious concerns about corruption, misuse of public land, and potential money laundering.
Due to delays on the part of PSIEC in providing the required information, the Income Tax Department is reportedly planning to impose penalties on the officials concerned.
Sources within the Corporation told the Tribune that after the original allottees defaulted on payments, PSIEC repossessed the plots as per the allotment conditions. However, instead of putting these plots up for public auction, they were quietly re-allotted at low prices to a select few, allegedly in a non-transparent manner.
The alleged modus operandi came to light during a separate probe conducted by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, the report added.
