He served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004 and from 2010 to 2022. He served as a Lok Sabha member from Sangrur from 2004 to 2009. He served as the Minister of Sports, Chemicals and Fertilizers in the third Vajpayee cabinet from 2000 to 2004.
S. Dhindsa was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2019. However, he returned the honour in 2020 during the Farmers' Movement, which shows his dedication to the farmers.
In 2024, S. Dhindsa served at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib under the religious punishment given by the Akal Takht Sahib, in which he listened to Gurbani, served the Bhandare and guarded the door of the Darbar Sahib. He had hinted that after completing this service, he may retire from politics.
