Punjab government mandates punjabi as compulsory subjects in schools latest news: The Punjab government made it obligatory for all state schools, independent of the affiliated board, to introduce Punjabi as a compulsory major subject. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains sternly warned the education boards that any school which will not include Punjabi in their curriculum as a subject shall be denied recognition.

He stressed that Punjabi should be taught in Punjab and that boards which do not teach Punjabi will not be recognized. The notification in this regard has already been released.

It must be mentioned here that since 2009, this rule exists which does not allow any board to give a 10th-grade certificate unless the student clears the 10th grade. This rule comes under the Punjab Learning of Punjabi and Other Languages Act, 2008. The Education Minister, however, issued a warning for strict enforcement lately.

Three things are specifically pointed out in the notification:

1. No student shall be promoted to class 10th unless he has studied Punjabi.
2. Punjabi should be made a compulsory subject in any school of any board in Punjab.
3. Any school found non-compliant with these instructions will face strict action under the Punjab Punjabi and Other Languages Education Act, 2008 and any amendments thereafter.

By declaring Punjabi as an obligatory subject at school, the government seeks to protect and promote the language and culture of Punjabi.
