“I humbly request forgiveness from Akal Takht Sahib, Jathedar Sahib, and the entire Sikh community."
Bir Singh Apology for Controversy Around 350th Martyrdom Diwas of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji: Punjabi singer Bir Singh has issued a public apology following backlash over his performance at a government-organized event in Srinagar that commemorated the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru. The incident sparked outrage within the Sikh community, with many accusing the singer of disrespecting the sanctity of the occasion.
The event was organized by the Punjab Government’s Language Department as part of a seminar dedicated to the life, legacy, and supreme sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. A video of Bir Singh's performance from the event went viral, drawing criticism for what many perceived as an inappropriate and ill-informed presentation during such a solemn and spiritual gathering.
In response, Bir Singh took to Instagram to issue a video apology and also sent a formal letter to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal authority of the Sikhs, expressing deep remorse for the incident.
“I am sending this letter to you regarding the mistake in the Srinagar program,” Singh said in his written apology.
“I had just arrived from Australia, and due to network issues, my team and I were disconnected. The main mistake lies with my management, who failed to inform me correctly about the nature and sanctity of the program,” he added.
Singh further explained that he had previously participated in commercial programs organized by the Language Department and mistakenly approached this event with the same tone and format.
“I went directly to the stage without realizing the true purpose of the gathering. I did not even notice the banner behind me. It was only after starting that we realized our grave error, that this program was dedicated to the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. We immediately stopped and offered an apology to the Sangat and recited couplets and verses in reverence,” he stated.
Acknowledging his misstep, the singer announced that he had terminated his management team over the mishandling and committed to observing strict respect and etiquette at all future religious or historical events.
“I humbly request forgiveness from Akal Takht Sahib, Jathedar Sahib, and the entire Sikh community. I am ready to accept any form of punishment deemed appropriate,” Bir Singh said, adding, “Such mistakes will never be repeated again.”
The incident has reignited conversations around sensitivity and preparedness at cultural and religious events. While many have appreciated the singer’s prompt and humble response, calls for greater accountability and cultural awareness in public performances continue.
