Punjab Declares Holiday on December 27 for National Child Martyrdom Day: In honor of National Child Martyrdom Day, the Punjab government has declared December 27 as a public holiday. The announcement was made by Punjab University (PU), confirming that all institutions, regional centers, and rural centers affiliated with PU located in Punjab will remain closed. This includes colleges and other affiliated institutions, as well as their administrative offices.
The holiday has been designated to pay tribute to the unparalleled sacrifice of the four Sahibzadas of Dasmesh Pita Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who laid down their lives for their faith and principles. December 27 has been officially recognized as National Child Martyrdom Day in remembrance of their valor and steadfastness.
The Story of Sahibzadas’ Martyrdom
The Shaheedi Jod Mela, a yearly event held in Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, commemorates the martyrdom of the four Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri Ji, the mother of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Pilgrims from across the globe gather to pay homage on this solemn occasion.
The tale of sacrifice dates back to 1705, when the Guru's family was separated while crossing the Sirsa River after leaving Anandpur Fort. The elder Sahibzadas, Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh, stayed with Guru Gobind Singh Ji and were martyred during the Battle of Chamkaur Sahib. The younger Sahibzadas, Baba Zorawar Singh (9) and Baba Fateh Singh (7), were captured along with Mata Gujri Ji by the Mughals near the village of Sahedi.
Bricked Alive for Their Faith
The captives were taken to Fatehgarh Sahib, where the young Sahibzadas were pressured to convert to Islam. Despite their tender age, they refused to renounce their faith. As punishment, the Mughals confined them in the Thanda Burj (a cold tower) for three days and two nights during the harsh winter, followed by the brutal act of bricking them alive. Mata Gujri Ji, overwhelmed by grief, also attained martyrdom.
Tribute and Significance
The legacy of the Sahibzadas’ sacrifice serves as a beacon of courage and conviction. The decision to observe this day as a public holiday underscores the state’s commitment to preserving and honoring its rich Sikh heritage and the timeless principles of freedom and justice.
The Punjab government encourages all citizens to reflect on the sacrifice of the Sahibzadas and participate in commemorative events to honor their memory.
