In the case involving the Punjab's Leader of Opposition and Congress Leader Partap Singh Bajwa, who made a controversial remark about the presence of grenades in the state, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday stated that the investigation is still pending. The next hearing is scheduled for May 7, 2025.

The lawyer representing the state reportedly took a softer stand, according to sources, and the status report submitted by the government was delayed. The court emphasized that there was no restriction on the investigation and directed the investigation team to continue its work independently. It also asserted that if the arrest of Partap Singh Bajwa is deemed necessary, prior intimation must be given.

An FIR was filed against the Congress MLA by Constable Taranpreet Kaur after Bajwa made a controversial statement claiming that “50 grenades” had reached Punjab, 18 of which had allegedly exploded, and 32 were pending. The constable alleged that Bajwa's statement was false and aimed at spreading disaffection and disunity. The FIR accuses Bajwa of promoting fear, disharmony, and endangering national sovereignty.

The FIR was registered on April 13, 2025 with the Punjab police. Bajwa’s statement was reportedly based on a news report published in Dainik Bhaskar on April 9, which claimed that 55 hand grenades had allegedly been sent from Pakistan via drones, with some still unaccounted for.

Bajwa has argued that the case is politically motivated, stemming from his public criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He claimed that his remarks did not contain misleading information that could threaten the sovereignty, unity, or integrity of the country.

On April 16, 2025, the Punjab and Haryana High Court granted interim relief to Bajwa, directing that "no coercive action" be taken against him until the next hearing. The court also restrained Bajwa from making any further public statements on the matter in the meantime.

The case has triggered political controversy, with Bajwa alleging that the AAP government is targeting him out of political vendetta. Legal proceedings are ongoing, with the next court hearing scheduled for May 7, 2025.
