Punjab Municipal Elections 2024 Latest News Today: Voting has begun across five municipal corporations in Punjab, marking a significant day for local governance in the state. Starting at 7:00 AM and set to conclude by 4:00 PM, voters in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Phagwara are casting their ballots for municipal corporations, alongside elections in 41 municipal councils and nagar panchayats.
A total of 3,336 candidates are contesting across 3,809 polling stations. Following the close of voting, counting will commence immediately, and results are expected to be declared by this evening.
The elections are witnessing intense competition among the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). For AAP, this election serves as a critical test of its growing influence, especially after securing three assembly seats in November by-elections. Key battlegrounds include Amritsar and Jalandhar, each with 85 wards, Ludhiana with 95 wards, Patiala with 60, and Phagwara with 50 wards.
To ensure smooth polling, 21,500 police and home guard personnel have been deployed, along with 23,000 election officials. Additionally, 25 IAS and PCS officers are overseeing the process as general observers, with heightened security at polling stations across the state.
