Darshan Song Controversy: High Court Stays Summons Against Ammy Virk, Sukh E, and Arshad Ali

The trio moved the High Court seeking quashing of the lower court's order, arguing that the claims were baseless.

Darshan Song Controversy, HC Stays Summons Against Ammy Virk, Sukh E, and Arshad Ali: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted interim relief to Punjabi singer-actors Ammy Virk and Sukh E, along with lyricist Arshad Ali, by staying the summons issued against them by a Mohali trial court in a copyright infringement case.

The case revolves around the popular Punjabi track "Darshan," which has now become the subject of a legal battle.

Petitioner Nirmal Singh Grewal claims that he co-wrote the song "Darshan" with Arshad Ali in 2021. According to Grewal, Ali later sold the song to Ammy Virk and Sukh E without his knowledge or consent, which he alleges is a clear violation of copyright law.

Based on this complaint, the Mohali trial court had, on February 14, issued summons to all three, Ammy Virk, Sukh E, and Arshad Ali, directing them to appear before the court on August 26.

The trio moved the High Court seeking quashing of the lower court’s order, arguing that the claims were baseless. They asserted that the song was originally authored by Sukh E and had no involvement from Nirmal Singh Grewal.

Their counsel argued that the summons were issued without substantial legal grounds and lacked due examination of facts.

Taking note of the arguments, the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the operation of the summons and also issued a notice to Nirmal Singh Grewal, asking for his reply in the matter.

This order has temporarily halted proceedings in the lower court and offers significant relief to the artists, who maintain that they have not violated any copyright norms.
