According to the Meteorological Department, Adampur Air Force Station recorded the coldest temperature in the plains of India at a chilling 0.7°C.

A yellow alert for a cold wave has been issued in 21 districts of Punjab, including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Patiala. Residents are bracing for a further dip in temperatures as cold winds sweep down from the mountains, bringing a bone-chilling chill.

The districts under cold wave alert include:

  • Northern Punjab: Amritsar, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran.
  • Central Punjab: Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Fatehgarh Sahib.
  • Western Punjab: Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, and Bathinda.
  • Southern Punjab: Mansa, Sangrur, Malerkotla, Patiala, Rupnagar, and Mohali.

Rain and Snow Expected as Western Disturbance Becomes Active

A western disturbance is set to become active on December 16, affecting Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, and nearby areas. The region is expected to witness light to moderate rain and snowfall, which will further intensify the cold conditions in Punjab and Chandigarh.

Meteorological experts explained that cold winds blowing from the mountains towards the plains after snowfall will likely cause a significant drop in temperatures.

  • Chandigarh: Expected temperatures range from 7°C to 22°C, with a cold wave warning in effect.
  • Amritsar: Temperatures between 5°C and 19°C.
  • Jalandhar: Predicted to range between 7°C and 18°C.
  • Ludhiana: Daytime and nighttime temperatures will range from 8°C to 20°C.
  • Patiala: Expected temperatures of 5°C to 21°C.
  • Mohali: Likely to range between 7°C and 22°C.

The cold wave, coupled with the possibility of rain and snowfall in the higher altitudes, is expected to create harsh conditions in the region.
