DGP Gaurav Yadav & Punjab Home Secretary Called Upon, Court Demands Accountability & Urges Immediate Action

CHANDIGARH: In a stern response to the negligent conduct of government witnesses, particularly police officers, in NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases, the Punjab-Haryana High Court has summoned top officials, including Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav and Punjab Home Secretary Gurkirat Kirpal Singh. The court voiced its displeasure at the lax approach of police personnel in handling drug-related cases, expressing concerns that this negligence could be indicative of a deeper issue within the system.

During the court session, strong remarks were made, underscoring a growing concern about the perceived inaction and inefficiency of the police force. The court remarked that the authorities seemed inactive, suggesting a potential collusion between law enforcement and traffickers. Subsequently, the court ordered the police to issue a formal apology before proceeding with necessary actions.

The case that brought this issue to light involved petitioner Arshdeep Singh, against whom an NDPS case was filed on September 1, 2020, resulting in his arrest. Despite a significant amount of time passing since the initiation of the case, progress has been sluggish. The petitioner highlighted that, despite having 20 government officials as witnesses, only one testimony has been taken thus far. This alarming trend prompted the High Court to intervene and demand accountability from the police force.
