Punjab’s Sex Ratio Latest News: The latest sex ratio statistics from Punjab’s civil registration system have revealed an alarming decline, particularly in the border districts of Pathankot and Gurdaspur.
In Pathankot, the sex ratio dropped from 902 in 2023 to 864 in 2024, meaning only 864 girls were born per 1,000 boys in the district last year. Gurdaspur followed closely with a ratio of 888, slightly improving from 2023’s figure of 885. Punjab's overall sex ratio for 2024 stood at 918, marking a modest improvement of two points from the previous year.
Among the top-performing districts, Kapurthala once again secured the highest gender ratio in the state at 987, though it recorded a slight decline from 992 in 2023. Malerkotla, known for its progressive efforts, showed a significant improvement, rising by 39 points to 961, maintaining its second position.
Experts in the border regions attribute the dismal numbers to factors like female foeticide and low literacy rates. Civil Surgeon Dr. Bharat Bhushan noted, “Despite the introduction of the PNDT Act, the situation has not improved much in these areas. Families below the poverty line often resort to illegal practices, including traveling to neighboring states like J&K and Himachal Pradesh for sex-selective abortions.”
Eminent sociologist Prof. Rajesh Gill has urged immediate government intervention, stating, “Districts with a sex ratio below 900 need to implement a tracking system for pregnant women to prevent such practices.”
On a more positive note, Kapurthala’s Additional Deputy Commissioner, Navneet Bal, expressed pride in the district's consistent performance. “Topping the state in gender ratio for the second year in a row reflects our sustained efforts. We are now working on a documentary for ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao,’ set to release on National Girl Child Day, January 24,” she said.
Hoshiarpur also showed encouraging numbers, with Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal highlighting a district-wide ratio of 923 and several blocks recording figures above 1,000.
Despite some bright spots, the declining sex ratio in parts of Punjab remains a grave concern, calling for stricter enforcement of laws and increased public awareness to address the issue.
