CM Mann and Arvind Kejriwal Dedicate Rs 145.26-Crore Sewage Treatment Plant to the People of Mohali
Mohali: In a significant step toward environmental sustainability, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal today dedicated a 15 MGD (million gallons per day) sewage treatment plant to the people of Mohali. The plant, built at a cost of Rs 145.26 crore, marks a major stride in the state’s efforts to conserve water and improve sanitation infrastructure.
Addressing the gathering after the inauguration, Chief Minister Mann said the state-of-the-art plant uses modern technology that will soon be replicated in other parts of Punjab. He emphasized that the plant’s treated water will be used for non-potable purposes, thereby helping preserve the state’s precious groundwater resources. Citing Singapore’s successful use of micro-filtration to convert rainwater into drinking water, Mann stressed the importance of adopting advanced technologies.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to future generations, Mann said the traditional political parties had neglected critical issues like water, air, and soil conservation due to lack of electoral incentives. "This negligence led to increased pollution and degradation of natural resources, causing immense damage to society," he added.
The Chief Minister noted that since the formation of the AAP government in Punjab, several landmark initiatives have been launched to revive the canal system, protect the environment, and promote public welfare. "In line with the adage ‘prevention is better than cure,’ we are committed to preserving our natural resources through proactive measures," Mann said.
Quoting Gurbani — ‘Pavan Guru, Pani Pita, Mata Dharti Mahatu’ — Mann reminded the audience of the sacred status given to nature in Sikh teachings. He called on the people of Punjab to pledge their support for environmental conservation by planting more trees and adopting eco-friendly practices. He also credited Arvind Kejriwal's visionary leadership for inspiring such progressive governance, citing Delhi’s model as a benchmark.
Congratulating the officials involved in executing the project, Mann described the sewage treatment plant as a milestone toward building a cleaner, greener, and progressive Punjab.
Meanwhile, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal called the inauguration of the 15 MGD sewage treatment plant at Sector-83, Mohali, a moment of pride. He noted that the plant’s capacity had been upgraded from its earlier 10 MGD limit and that the Rs 145.26 crore project had been revamped under the leadership of CM Mann.
Kejriwal announced that a comprehensive plan to transform Punjab’s urban infrastructure will be rolled out in the coming months. Starting December, the state government will ensure improved water supply, sewage systems, sanitation, roads, lighting, and STPs in 166 cities across Punjab.
He also shared that the new plant features advanced nutrient removal technology, and an Ultra Filtration Tertiary Treatment Plant with a 5 MGD capacity has also been commissioned on-site. This is Punjab’s first such plant, and the treated water will be used for irrigation, road cleaning, toilet flushing, and other purposes — reducing reliance on groundwater.
To further support sustainability, a 1-megawatt solar power plant has been installed at the facility to reduce energy consumption. Kejriwal added that GMADA (Greater Mohali Area Development Authority) has built the plant using a scientific approach, keeping in mind Mohali’s projected population growth over the next two decades.
He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and urban development, promising that such efforts would continue unabated in the interest of Punjab and its people.
