The Punjab government has maintained that the Union’s involvement could help de-escalate tensions.
New Delhi, January 6, 2025 — The Supreme Court adjourned the hearing on the ongoing farmers' protest after being informed by the Punjab government that the protesting farmers had agreed to meet Justice (Retired) Nawab Singh, Chairperson of the High-Powered Committee established to mediate the dispute.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the Punjab government, told a bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice NK Singh that the meeting was scheduled for 3 PM on Monday. Sibal expressed optimism about a potential resolution, stating, "We have managed to persuade the protesting farmers to meet Justice Nawab Singh. We are hopeful for a breakthrough."
Background of the Protest
The protests, spearheaded by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, have been ongoing since November 26, 2024, with key demands including a statutory guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. Farmers have been blocking the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana since February 2024.
In September 2024, the Supreme Court formed a High-Powered Committee to engage with the protesting farmers, but the committee's efforts had previously been met with resistance.
Health Concerns for Farmer Leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal
A significant aspect of the hearing revolved around the deteriorating health of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a farmer leader on a hunger strike since November 26. Dallewal, a cancer patient suffering from age-related ailments, has reportedly stopped taking water. Despite his critical condition, he has refused medical intervention unless the Union government addresses the farmers' demands.
The Court had earlier directed Punjab authorities to shift Dallewal to a hospital for medical supervision without forcing him to end his hunger strike. However, compliance faced resistance from protesters, who feared a forceful intervention.
Court’s Actions and Current Status
The Supreme Court, hearing a contempt petition against Punjab officials for not complying with its directives, expressed frustration over delays in providing medical aid to Dallewal. During Monday's hearing, the Court was updated on efforts to resolve the situation through negotiation. The case was adjourned to Friday to allow time for the meeting with Justice Nawab Singh.
Challenges in Implementation
The Punjab government has maintained that the Union’s involvement could help de-escalate tensions. However, the Union government has argued that its intervention might exacerbate the situation. Previously, the Supreme Court directed the Union to provide logistical support if requested by Punjab authorities.
As of now, the farmers’ demands remain unmet, and the High-Powered Committee’s efforts are viewed as a critical step toward resolving the stalemate.
