It will create a more inclusive and diverse Punjab Police force: DGP Punjab

CHANDIGARH: In a significant move towards inclusivity, the Punjab Police has introduced a new policy enabling transgender individuals to join their ranks and participate in the recruitment process. This progressive step, aligned with the Transgender Act of 2019, aims to provide equal opportunities to transgender individuals and promote diversity within the police force.

The directive, issued by the police headquarters and applicable to all branches, confirms that transgender candidates will be categorized under the reserved category. They will also be entitled to the same benefits and privileges enjoyed by other reserved categories.

Punjab Police conducts annual recruitment drives to create employment opportunities for the youth, and this initiative ensures that transgender individuals can partake in these opportunities in the future. To be eligible for the recruitment process, transgender candidates must possess a certificate issued by the District Magistrate. Furthermore, transgender candidates will receive similar concessions in terms of age group, application fees, and other benefits that are extended to other reserved categories.

In terms of the Physical Measurement Test and Physical Screening Test, transgender candidates will be treated on par with female candidates. However, educational qualifications must still align with the requirements specified in the recruitment process advertisement.

DGP Gaurav Yadav, in a letter addressing this new policy, expressed optimism that it will create a more inclusive and diverse Punjab Police force while providing opportunities for transgender individuals to contribute to law enforcement and public safety.
