Mukul Roy, Former Railway Minister and West Bengal MLA, Passes Away at 71
Former Union Railway Minister and senior politician Mukul Roy passed away on Monday due to a cardiac arrest at a private hospital, his family confirmed. He was 71 years old.
Roy’s son, Subhranshu Roy, said that his father had been in a coma for several days before passing away at 1:30 am.
Mukul Roy was one of the founding members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) when it was established in 1998. However, after differences with the party, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2017.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Roy contested from the Krishnanagar Uttar constituency on a BJP ticket and won. Later, he returned to the TMC.
During his political career, Roy also served as the Railway Minister in 2011 when the TMC was part of the UPA-2 government. He was also elected twice to the Rajya Sabha, representing West Bengal.
