Despite repeated notices, Badal did not respond or appear.
Sukhbir Singh Badal Tankhaiya At Takht Sri Patna Sahib Latest News Today: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal, has been officially declared a Tankhaiya by the Panj Pyare (five beloved ones) of Takhat Sri Patna Sahib, one of the five highest seats of Sikh religious authority. The decision comes after Badal failed to appear before the Takhat despite being summoned twice.
According to sources, Sukhbir Badal was called to present himself before the Panj Pyare following allegations related to his role in supporting individuals found guilty of violating a Hukamnama (religious edict). Despite repeated notices, Badal did not respond or appear. This non-compliance led to the declaration of Tankhaiya, a term reserved in Sikh tradition for someone who is found guilty of religious misconduct.
Background of the Case
The controversy stems from an emergency meeting held on May 21, where Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, Executive of Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara, and Jathedar Baba Tek Singh of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib were found guilty of violating a Hukamnama. They were declared Tankhaiya during that meeting.
Sukhbir Singh Badal was alleged to have conspired or played a supporting role in this violation and was therefore also ordered to appear before the religious body. On June 1, he was given 10 days to comply. However, with no appearance or response from Badal, the Takhat has now taken disciplinary action against him as well.
What Does Being a 'Tankhaiya' Mean?
In Sikh tradition, the title Tankhaiya is given to a person who violates the Sikh code of conduct (Rehat Maryada) or acts against the larger interests of the Sikh community. Once declared Tankhaiya, the individual must appear before the Takht to explain and, if required, seek forgiveness. Based on the severity of the act, the Takht may impose religious punishment or penance, in consultation with the five high priests.
As of now, no response has been issued by Sukhbir Singh Badal or the Shiromani Akali Dal regarding the declaration. The development adds a serious dimension to the already sensitive relationship between some political figures and Sikh religious leadership.
Observers say this move by the Panj Pyare could have significant political and religious implications in Punjab, especially with the growing scrutiny of religious accountability among community leaders.
More updates are expected in the coming days as the Takhat may move forward with further disciplinary actions or issue directives regarding the next steps for reconciliation.
