Punjab Vidhan Sabha Passes Resolution Against BBMB’s Water Release to Haryana, latest news: In a united stance to protect Punjab’s water rights amid rising scarcity, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday passed a resolution opposing the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB)'s decision to release an additional 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana.
Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal introduced the resolution, citing that the state is already grappling with severe water shortages. He added that Haryana has exhausted its annual water allocation and that Punjab had earlier released 4,000 cusecs of water to Haryana on humanitarian grounds.
He further pointed out that groundwater is being overexploited in 115 of Punjab’s 153 blocks, raising serious concerns. Considering these reasons, he stated that Punjab cannot afford to release any more water.
The resolution described the BBMB’s decision as “illegal” and a “robbery of Punjab’s rights.” It demanded an urgent review of the water release directive and the appointment of Punjab’s engineers and officers to the BBMB, as mandated under the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966.
he resolution came in the wake of an all-party meeting held on May 2, which was convened by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. In the meeting, representatives from AAP, Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP, BSP, CPI, and CPM unanimously opposed the BBMB’s directive.
Chief Minister Mann cautioned that water levels in Punjab’s key reservoirs Bhakra, Pong, and Ranjit Sagar are 12 to 32 feet lower than during the same period last year, sparking concerns ahead of the paddy sowing season.
The Punjab government accused the Central Government and the BJP-led Haryana administration of unfairly diverting the state’s water, as the House stood united across party lines to defend Punjab’s water rights.
