Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia to appear before the SIT in connection with a high-profile drugs case.
Supreme Court Orders Bikram Majithia to Appear Before SIT in Drugs Case latest news: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for interrogation in connection with a high-profile drugs case.
The court has mandated his appearance on March 17, 2025, at 11 a.m., with a further directive to appear on March 18 at the same time if required by the investigating team.
The order came as the apex court was hearing a plea from the Punjab government seeking the cancellation of Majithia’s bail, granted earlier by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on August 10, 2022.
The state has challenged the bail, arguing concerns over the Akali leader’s alleged involvement in a drug racket case that has been under scrutiny since an FIR was filed against him in December 2021 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court emphasized the need for Majithia to cooperate fully with the SIT, which is probing the case based on a 2018 report by the anti-drug Special Task Force (STF). The court scheduled the next hearing of the bail cancellation plea for March 24, 2025, indicating that further developments in the interrogation could influence its decision.
Majithia, a prominent SAD figure and brother-in-law of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal, has been a contentious figure in this legal battle. He was previously arrested and spent over five months in Patiala jail before being released on bail. The Punjab government has repeatedly accused him of non-cooperation with the investigation, a charge Majithia and his legal team have denied, labeling the case as politically motivated.
The Supreme Court’s directive underscores the ongoing tension between the Punjab government and the Akali leader, with the state pushing for stricter action in the drugs case. The outcome of the SIT interrogation and the March 24 hearing could prove pivotal in determining Majithia’s legal standing in this long-running controversy.
