Farmers Mahapanchayat: In a tragic incident, three women farmers lost their lives and 41 others were injured in two separate road accidents on Saturday while traveling to the Kisan Mahapanchayat at the Khanauri border.
The first mishap took place near Barnala sub-jail when a vehicle collided with a truck. The bus involved in the accident was carrying farmers from Dallewal village, the home of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is currently on a fast-unto-death protest.
The second, more severe accident occurred on the Bathinda National Highway bypass, where a bus belonging to the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Ugrahan overturned. The crash resulted in the immediate death of three women and left many others severely injured.
Emergency responders rushed to the scenes, with the injured being transported to nearby hospitals in Bathinda, Ludhiana, and Patiala. Several victims are in critical condition.
Police have begun investigations into the accidents, with early indications suggesting that dense fog may have played a role in the collisions.
The deaths of the three women from BKU Ugrahan have sent shockwaves through the farmer community, which had gathered in large numbers to participate in the Mahapanchayat to advance their demands.
The accidents have brought a somber mood to what was intended to be a day of unity and solidarity for farmers advocating for their rights.
