The farmers’ protest, ongoing since February 2024, stems from demands largely directed at the Centre, he said.
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Press Conference Today on Farmers Protest Latest News: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, during his first press conference of the year on Thursday, placed the responsibility for the prolonged farmers' protest squarely on the Centre. He alleged that the Union Government has failed to take meaningful steps to resolve the farmers’ grievances and is attempting to undermine the state's agricultural framework, particularly the Mandikaran (regulated market) system.
The farmers’ protest, ongoing since February 2024, stems from demands largely directed at the Centre, he said, adding that the Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Arjun Munda have held multiple rounds of discussions with farmers, but no resolution has been achieved.
“Centre Must Respond to Farmers”
CM Mann criticized the Centre's approach, saying, “We mediated between both sides and even brought Union Ministers and farmers together on one platform to find a solution, but no consensus was reached. After the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, which saw the NDA’s victory, there has been no effort to continue talks with the farmers.”
He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously announced the repeal of the controversial farm laws but accused the government of attempting to reintroduce them through indirect means.
“Farmers' demands lie entirely within the Centre’s jurisdiction. Why is the Centre silent? Why haven’t they invited the farmers for discussions? This lack of initiative is worsening the situation,” Mann questioned.
Jagjit Singh Dallewal's Hunger Strike
Referring to the hunger strike by farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, CM Mann assured that the Punjab Government is providing medical assistance as directed by the Supreme Court. He emphasized the peaceful nature of the protest and stated, “I have personally spoken to Dallewal and assured him of our support. His health is important, but there is no need for forced hospitalization as the protest remains non-violent.”
Mann also criticized the Centre's directive to intervene directly, calling it an attempt to shift blame. “This is a peaceful protest in Punjab's jurisdiction. A solution can only be reached when all stakeholders come to the table for a dialogue,” he said.
Allegations Against Centre: Undermining Mandikaran
In a sharp rebuke, CM Mann accused the Union Government of trying to dismantle Punjab's regulated market system (Mandikaran), a cornerstone of the state's agricultural economy. “We have received a letter from the Centre seeking suggestions, but it’s clear they are moving towards finishing Mandikaran. Agriculture is a state subject, and we oppose any move that undermines the state’s interests,” he asserted.
Call for Dialogue
CM Mann reiterated his commitment to resolving farmers' issues and called on the Centre to engage in meaningful dialogue. “The Centre must take the initiative to meet with the farmers. We have done our part by holding several rounds of discussions. It’s time for them to act responsibly and address the concerns of the farming community,” he concluded.
The farmers’ protests continue to gain momentum, with the spotlight now firmly on the Centre’s response to the allegations and demands.
