Rajasthan Rajya Sabha Elections 2024: Ravneet Bittu's Unopposed Victory Most Likely

It is pertinent to mention that state legislators elect the Rajya Sabha members.

Rajasthan Rajya Sabha Elections 2024, Ravneet Bittu Latest News: Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu's entry into the Rajya Sabha from Punjab is nearly assured. On Tuesday, it is expected to be officially confirmed as today marks the final date for the withdrawal of nominations for the Rajasthan Rajya Sabha elections 2024, after which the results will be declared.

Meanwhile, Ravneet Singh Bittu's victory has already come to a foregone conclusion following the Congress party's decision not to field a candidate in these by-elections.

With the Congress not putting forward a candidate, only three contenders remain among those who filed nomination papers. The BJP's dummy candidate, Sunil Kothari, has already withdrawn his nomination. Additionally, the independent candidate Babita Wadhwani's nomination was canceled after scrutiny. This leaves Bittu as the sole candidate in the race.

It is pertinent to mention that state legislators elect the Rajya Sabha members. The number of vacant seats is divided by the number of assembly seats, with one added to the result. The outcome determines the number of votes required to win one seat. In Rajasthan, one seat is up for election. Adding one to this gives the final divisor of two.

Rajasthan has a total of 200 assembly seats, though six are currently vacant. This resulted in 194 active assembly members. Dividing 194 by two and adding one yields a requirement of 98 votes to win the Rajya Sabha election. The BJP has 114 MLAs, while the Congress only has 66 MLAs. Based on these figures, the BJP’s victory seems to be guaranteed.

According to media reports from Rajasthan, the last date for the withdrawal of nominations is August 27. Following this, the result will be declared. The voting will take place on September 3 only if any opposition arises or if required. Counting would then occur at 5:00 pm on the same day, with the election process concluding by September 6.

This by-election is being held for a seat vacated after Congress leader KC Venugopal was elected to the Lok Sabha. The term for this seat lasts until June 21, 2026. It is important to note that Rajasthan has a total of 10 Rajya Sabha seats, with the BJP currently holding four and Congress five.
