
New Delhi: Voting began around 10 am on Saturday for the 15th Vice-Presidential election in which ruling NDA's candidate M Venkaiah Naidu is pitted in a straight contest with Opposition-backed Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
New Delhi: Voting began around 10 am on Saturday for the 15th Vice-Presidential election in which ruling NDA's candidate M Venkaiah Naidu is pitted in a straight contest with Opposition-backed Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
Among early voters were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, M Venkaiah Naidu, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath among scores of MPs who lined up outside a designated Parliament House room to cast their secret ballot. Congress President Sonia Gandhi will cast her vote around 11 am, party sources said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Naidu are yet to arrive for the vote in which Naidu has a clear edge over Gandhi. MPs of both Houses of Parliament are members of the collegium that votes in the V-P poll.
Voting will continue till 5 pm and is being conducted by Rajya Aabha Secretary General, returning officer for the election. There are 790 MPs in both houses with four current vacancies. Anyone who wins half the valid votes cast plus one will clinch the top constitutional office.
