Chandigarh: The Punjab Government’s initiative, ‘Mission Chardi Kala’, aimed at restoring the state after the devastating floods, continues to receive generous donations from across the state.

On Wednesday, MLA Amolak Singh from Jaito constituency handed over a cheque of rupees 13,40,000 to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, contributing to Mission Chardi Kala. CM Mann expressed his gratitude to the MLA for his support.

The state government is simultaneously distributing the funds received under the mission among flood-affected people to compensate for the losses they suffered.

Mission Chardi Kala was launched in September to help Punjab recover from the severe floods — the worst the state has witnessed since 1988. While announcing the launch, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann appealed to people across Punjab and the nation to contribute to the initiative.

According to CM Mann, around 2,300 villages were submerged, nearly seven lakh people became homeless, and around 20 lakh people were affected by the floods. He further stated that approximately 3,200 schools were damaged, 56 lives were lost, and about 8,500 kilometres of roads and 2,500 bridges were destroyed.

Additionally, 1,400 clinics, several government buildings, and 19 colleges suffered severe damage.

Highlighting the spirit behind the initiative, CM Mann said that ‘Mission Chardi Kala’ symbolises resilience and the unwavering spirit to stand strong during the toughest times. He invited people of Punjab, citizens nationwide, industrialists, charitable trusts, artists, and others wishing to contribute to rehabilitation efforts to support the mission.

“I assure you that every penny donated will be managed with complete transparency and integrity,” Mann said.

During the floods, more than 200 villages in Amritsar district were affected — 100 of them from Ajnala constituency. Compensation cheques have already been distributed to affected families in 52 of these villages, 15 days before the promised deadline, Minister of Food & Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, Lal Chand Kataruchak said in a post on his X.

Punjab witnessed one of its worst flood disasters in decades, triggered by the swelling of the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, along with seasonal rivulets overflowing due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Intense rainfall within Punjab further aggravated the crisis. The worst-affected districts included Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Fazilka, and Tarn Taran.
