
Chennai: A college student suspected to be
drunk allegedly rammed his car at high speed into a row of
parked autorickshaws, killing one person and injuring five
others in the early hours here today, police said.
The 20-year old student, driving the sedan in which four
of his friends were also travelling, hit a row of parked
autorickshaws on the arterial Cathedral Road here. He was
arrested.
A 38-year old driver who had dozed off in his autorickshaw
which was the first in the line of parked vehicles died in the
impact, police said.
Five other drivers of autorickshaws were injured in the
mishap. They were treated at a government hospital and sent
home, they said.
Police said the student who was behind the wheels and
allegedly under the influence of alcohol was arrested while
the other occupants of the car detained for questioning.
A case has been registered against him under IPC
provisions, they said.
Four other occupants of the car, who were also students
have been taken into custody for questioning, they added.
In a similar incident in September 2016, an autorickshaw
driver was killed and eight others were injured when a Porsche
driven at high speed by a student rammed into vehicles parked
in the same road.
In another case of drunken driving, Tamil actor Jai was
arrested after he rammed his car into a road divider here in
September.
