BJP Fact-Finding Team Visits South Calcutta Law College After Alleged Rape of Law Student
A BJP fact-finding team, comprising former Union Minister Satpal Singh and four others, visited South Calcutta Law College in West Bengal, where a 24-year-old law student was allegedly raped within the college premises on the evening of June 25.
The team includes former Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi, Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb, and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra. They were accompanied by party supporters and protestors at the college campus. West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar and party MLA Agnimitra Paul were also present at the site.
On the previous day, Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), visited the college. She alleged that the West Bengal Police obstructed the NCW team from accessing the crime scene and meeting the victim’s family.
Speaking to ANI, Majumdar yesterday stated, “The police are not allowing us to meet the victim or her family, nor are they permitting us to visit the crime scene or take photographs.” She further alleged that the police were deliberately hiding the victim's family and warned that these developments would be included in the NCW’s official report.
“The police are saying they don’t know where the family is. The Deputy Commissioner, who is the nodal officer for the case, claims ignorance about the victim’s whereabouts. This is highly suspicious. We will document all of this in our report,” she said.
She added, “After receiving the Commission’s letter yesterday, the police rushed through all formalities in a single day. Now they claim they don’t know where the victim and her family are. This is unacceptable. We will take every action necessary.”
Meanwhile, West Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya questioned the timing and intent of the NCW’s visit. “Why didn’t the Women’s Commission visit other places where atrocities against women are happening? Why not go to Manipur or Odisha? It is supposed to be an independent institution, but it is clearly not functioning that way,” she said.
West Bengal BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul today on june 30, told ANI, "We talked to the Commissioner of Police and even the Vice Principal... We were being stopped from entering. They didn't want us to get in. There has been injustice, and if they stop us, there will be repercussions. They acted smartly and let us in... TMC government is a government of rapists."
