ECI Releases Booklet on Vice-Presidential Election 2025 Latest News: In an initiative aimed at enhancing public awareness about the upcoming Vice-Presidential Election 2025, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has prepared a booklet titled “Election to the Office of Vice-President of India, 2025” to explain all the notable aspects of the election in a simple and accessible manner.
The ECI made the announcement in a press release issued on 29 July 2025.
According to the press release, the booklet broadly covers the constitutional provisions relating to the Vice-Presidential election.
It also provides details on the composition of the Electoral College, eligibility conditions for candidates, key provisions on candidature, framing of the election schedule, and the appointment of the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers. Additionally, it addresses the fixing of the place of poll, the system of voting, the method of counting votes, and the provisions for resolving disputes related to the election.

The Election Commission of India, under Article 324 of the Constitution, is mandated to conduct the election to the office of the Vice-President of India.
“Under the provisions of Article 68(2) of the Constitution, an election to fill a vacancy in the office of the Vice-President, occurring due to death, resignation, removal, or otherwise, shall be held as soon as possible after the occurrence of the vacancy. The person elected to fill the vacancy shall, subject to the provisions of Article 67, be entitled to hold office for the full term of five years from the date on which he/she assumes office,” the press release stated.
“The election to the office of the Vice-President of India is governed by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the rules made thereunder, namely the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974,” it further said.
“The Vice-Presidential Election significantly differs from the more commonly known elections to the House of the People and State Legislative Assemblies in terms of the electorate involved, eligibility of candidates, system of voting, vote counting, and the legal provisions governing the election, to name a few,” the release added.
