Opposition MPs Travel to Manipur Amidst Violence to Assess Ground Situation & Seek Solutions
MANIPUR: The Situation in Manipur remains tense as clashes between security forces and attackers escalate, with three soldiers reported dead in recent encounters. The ongoing violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities, which has persisted for three months since May 3, now appears to be taking a dangerous turn towards the security personnel.
Amidst the unrest, a delegation comprising 20 MPs from the opposition alliance 'Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance' (INDIA) embarked on a visit to Manipur on Saturday morning, July 29. Their mission is to assess the ground situation and offer insights to the government and parliament regarding the prevailing violence in the state and ways to address the grievances of its people.
It is worth noting that the state government has reportedly not granted permission for the visit of these 20 MPs. As a result, there are speculations that they might face hurdles or potential restrictions at the airport during their arrival. Over the last 24 hours, the state has witnessed intense confrontations between the security forces and attackers in multiple locations within Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. Disturbingly, the attackers are said to have detonated approximately 200 bombs during these encounters.
A tragic outcome of the clashes includes the loss of three lives at four different locations under the jurisdiction of Phugkachao police station in Bishnupur. Additionally, on Thursday, two more people lost their lives, further adding to the toll. Furthermore, five individuals, including a commando each from the Army and Manipur Police, sustained injuries in the violent confrontations.
