Nizamabad (Telangana), June 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated the headquarters of the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad, Telangana. The inauguration comes nearly two years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the formation of a turmeric-focused board.

Speaking at the event, Amit Shah said, “Nizamabad is known as the capital of turmeric. Following the establishment of this board, within 3-4 years, turmeric from Nizamabad will be able to reach global markets.”

Highlighting the significance of the board, Shah added, “In the 2023 elections, the Prime Minister had promised the formation of the Turmeric Board, and today we have inaugurated its temporary headquarters. The board will focus on packaging, branding, marketing, and export—eliminating the role of middlemen and ensuring better returns for farmers.”

He further noted, "We also have the turmeric curcumin, which is not available more than 7.8% globally. We have also initiated efforts to obtain a GI tag and promote the marketing of organic turmeric. The Central government aims to achieve turmeric exports worth 1 billion US dollars by 2030.”

Reiterating the commitment to turmeric farmers, Shah said, “The board will ensure farmers receive maximum value for their produce. The turmeric of Telangana, particularly from Nizamabad, will soon be reaching several countries.”

According to an ANI report citing government data, during 2023-24, India exported approximately 1.62 lakh tonnes of turmeric and turmeric-based products, valued at 226.5 million US dollars.

Currently, more than 30 varieties of turmeric are cultivated across over 20 states in India, with Maharashtra being the largest producer in the country.
