Dr. Ajay Taware Arrested in Connection with Kidney Transplant Racket
Police on Thursday arrested Dr. Ajay Taware, the former medical superintendent of Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital, in connection with an alleged kidney transplant racket at a leading private hospital, The Tribune reported, citing officials.
According to the report, Dr. Taware is currently lodged at Yerwada Central Jail.
The city crime branch took him into custody in connection with the 2022 kidney transplant racket at Ruby Hall Clinic, a prominent private hospital in Pune.
"We have taken Dr. Ajay Taware into custody in the kidney racket case, and he will be produced before the court today," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Nikhil Pingale.
Dr. Taware was previously arrested in 2024 for allegedly tampering with the blood samples of a 17-year-old boy involved in a fatal Porsche car crash in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
In May 2022, Pune police registered a case against 15 individuals, including the managing trustee and staff of Ruby Hall Clinic, for alleged malpractice during a kidney transplant conducted in March that year.
In the case, a woman from Kolhapur was allegedly promised Rs15 lakh to pose as the wife of a male kidney recipient and donate her kidney. In exchange, the recipient’s intended donor—a young woman—received a kidney from her own mother. The fraudulent swap was exposed on March 29, 2022, when the Kolhapur woman revealed her real identity following a dispute over the promised payment.
