Justice Varma Cash Row: 1.5-Foot Cash Stacks, All Unexplained – India Today

India Today, in its report, claimed it had accessed the details of findings of the in-house inquiry committee set up by the Supreme Court to investigate the alleged recovery of cash from the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma.

According to the report, the inquiry panel concluded that Justice Varma failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the source of the money. The allegations of misconduct, it stated, were grave enough to warrant impeachment proceedings.

The report revealed that several stacks of burnt currency notes—each reportedly up to 1.5 feet high—were found scattered across a storeroom in Justice Varma's residence in Delhi.

"The presence of burnt cash in the storeroom was undeniably established," the report noted. "Therefore, the burden of explanation shifted to Justice Varma, who failed to account for the cash, offering only a flat denial and alleging a conspiracy."

The report also mentioned that 17 individuals, including Justice Varma's daughter, were present at his 30-Tughlak Crescent residence on the night of March 14–15, when a fire broke out. The storeroom where the cash was discovered was under the “covert” and “active” control of Justice Varma and his family, the panel found.

Responding to the judge’s allegation of a conspiracy, the panel concluded that no outsider could have accessed the storeroom, as it remained locked and was accessible only to Justice Varma and his family.

The SHO of Tughlaq Nagar Police Station stated that stacks of burnt currency on the floor measured about 1.5 feet in height, with another similarly sized stack found on a ledge. The currency was scattered from the storeroom door to the opposite wall.

“Considering the direct and electronic evidence on record, the committee is formally of the view that there is sufficient substance in the allegations. The misconduct found to be proven is serious enough to initiate proceedings for the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma,” the report added.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to disclose the findings of the three-member inquiry committee—appointed by the top court—under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
