Residents have been advised to brace for colder conditions as the weather system moves through the region.
Punjab, Chandigarh, North India Weather Forecast Update Latest News: Heavy rain disrupted life in Delhi and adjoining areas on Wednesday, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing alerts for rain, snowfall, and dense fog across various regions of the country until New Year.
Rain Brings Chaos to Delhi-NCR
The national capital witnessed steady rainfall starting at around 2:30 am, resulting in waterlogged streets and traffic disruptions in parts of south, central, and north Delhi. As of 11:30 am, the Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 9.1 mm of rainfall. Other locations also reported significant rainfall, including Lodhi Road (10.8 mm), Delhi University (11 mm), Palam (8.4 mm), Ridge (9 mm), and Pusa (9.5 mm).
Cause of the Weather Disturbance
According to IMD officials, an active western disturbance interacting with easterly winds is responsible for the light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in northwest and central India, including Delhi-NCR.
Naresh Kumar, a scientist at IMD, stated that the western disturbance, currently positioned near Punjab and adjoining areas, is likely to trigger light rain or snowfall in parts of the western Himalayan region, further contributing to a dip in temperatures across the plains.
Temperature Drop Expected
The IMD forecasts a significant decline in temperatures across Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan over the next two days. Residents have been advised to brace for colder conditions as the weather system moves through the region.
The western disturbance is also expected to bring hailstorms and thunderstorms to northwestern and central India, along with light to moderate snowfall in the Himalayan region on December 27 and 28.
Week-Long Weather Outlook
Between December 26, 2024, and January 1, 2025, another fresh and active western disturbance is predicted to impact the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains. The IMD anticipates scattered to widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy falls in northwest and central India.
Temperatures are expected to fluctuate during the week. Minimum temperatures may rise by 1-3 degrees Celsius in northwest, central, and western India initially, followed by a gradual drop. In contrast, the Western Himalayan region is likely to see below-normal minimum temperatures, ranging 2-4 degrees Celsius lower than usual.
Cold wave conditions may develop in isolated pockets of north Rajasthan and nearby areas in Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
Rain, Fog, and Snowfall Alerts
Residents across the northern and central parts of the country have been advised to prepare for dense fog, colder temperatures, and possible snowfall in hilly areas. While most regions will see near-normal rainfall, northern parts of peninsular India are expected to receive above-average rainfall during this period.
The IMD has urged citizens to take necessary precautions, especially while traveling in areas likely to be affected by dense fog or adverse weather conditions.
