Pakistan: 18 Members of a Family Washed Away in Swat River Flash Flood Latest news: In a devastating incident, 18 members of the same family were swept away by flash floods in Pakistan's Swat River on Friday, June 27, according to a report by WION.
As per the report, at least seven people, including two children, have been confirmed dead, while several others are still missing. Rescue operations are currently underway.
The victims, including the family from Sialkot, were reportedly on a picnic in the scenic Swat Valley, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a popular tourist destination in Pakistan.
The tragedy unfolded around 8:00 AM local time, while the family was having breakfast by the riverside. Due to heavy rain upstream, the water level in the Swat River suddenly surged, catching the picnickers off guard.
One survivor told the media that four women and six children from his family were swept away within seconds, along with three others.
"We were having breakfast and drinking tea, and the children went to take a selfie near the river," another survivor was quoted as saying by Geo TV.
Videos of the incident that have gone viral on social media show a group of people stranded in the middle of the river, surrounded by rapid, muddy, and swirling currents. The river appears turbulent, with water levels dangerously high, clearly indicating flash flood conditions.
In one image, adults and children, including women in traditional attire, can be seen standing on a small patch of elevated ground or rock, trying to stay stable and waiting for rescue. Some individuals are seen being swept away within seconds.
According to the WION report, some survivors have alleged that rescue teams arrived hours after the incident began, raising questions about emergency response times.
