Female Law Student Gang-Raped Inside Kolkata College; Three Arrested
Kolkata Female Law Student Gang Rape News: In a horrific incident, a female law student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on June 25. The accused include a former student and two college staff members.
According to police, three people were arrested on Thursday in connection with the case.
“Three persons have been arrested based on a complaint lodged by the woman. According to the victim, the incident took place on June 25. The investigation is ongoing,” a police officer said.
All three accused are scheduled to be produced before a court on Friday.
As per a Hindustan Times report, the social media profile of the prime accused, identified as Monojit Mishra, indicates that he was formerly the president of the All India Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) youth wing at the college. He currently works as a criminal lawyer in the Alipore court in Kolkata, the report said.
Further details revealed that while the prime accused allegedly raped the victim, the other two stood guard and assisted in the crime.
The incident reportedly occurred between 7:30 PM and 8:50 PM on June 25. Police have cordoned off the guard room where the incident allegedly took place.
The accused's mobile phones have been seized. A forensic team, along with senior police officials, visited the college to collect samples from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
Commenting on the incident, Amit Malviya, in-charge of BJP's National Information & Technology Department and co-incharge for West Bengal, said,
“Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on 25th June, by none other than a former student and two college staff members.”
He further alleged that one of the accused was affiliated with the TMC.
“Shockingly, reports suggest that a TMC member is also involved. The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women.”
Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, also criticized the ruling TMC government, stating, “Anything can happen in this state. Last year, a junior doctor was raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. There is no safety for women in the state. The Chief Minister will now call it a small incident and offer compensation to the victim. She must resign.”
In response to the allegations, TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar said, “It is unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition is using a social menace to launch a political attack. We should all unite to fight this menace.”
Trinankur Bhattacharjee, state president of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), told the media,
“Firstly, I demand the strictest punishment for those found guilty. The accused may have been associated with TMCP in the past, but he never held any important position. This is not TMCP's responsibility.”
In a related case, Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was recently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical trainee at RG Kar Medical College—an incident that took place less than a year ago.
