AAP Delhi President Slams BJP’s Actions While it observes ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ on 50 Years of Emergency
AAP President Slams BJP’s Actions on ‘Samvidhaan HatyaDiwas’ latest news updates: AAP Delhi President Saurabh Bhardwaj on Thursday criticized the BJP government for observing June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’, marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, and drew comparisons between the current BJP-led government and the government led by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the Emergency.
In his first comparison, Bhardwaj alleged that the BJP demolished around 300 slums in Wazirpur on the same day they observed ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’, claiming the government was repeating actions it condemned from the Emergency era.
Speaking to ANI, Bhardwaj said, “What is shown in the BJP's Emergency exhibition? It showed how slums were demolished with bulldozers everywhere. You are doing the same. Yesterday, on the anniversary of the Emergency, you demolished around 300 slums in Wazirpur...”
He further accused the BJP government of imprisoning leaders of opposition parties, drawing parallels with the mass arrests during the Emergency.
“Second, what is the meaning of the Emergency? Opponents were jailed, and you did the same with Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and P. Chidambaram.”
Bhardwaj also alleged that the government was using central agencies to restrict freedom of expression and suppress dissent.
“Third, Emergency indicates no freedom of expression; you have also imposed restrictions. If someone questions you, you suppress them using CBI, ED, and Income Tax.”
June 25 marked the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. A two-minute silence was observed during a Union Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, and a resolution was passed.
The resolution stated, “The Union Cabinet, chaired by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, resolved to commemorate and honour the sacrifices of countless individuals who valiantly resisted the Emergency and its attempt at subversion of the spirit of the Indian Constitution — a subversion which began in 1974 with a heavy-handed attempt at crushing the Navnirman Andolan and Sampoorna Kranti Abhiyan.”
