Supreme Court Quashes Defamation Case Against Rahul Gandhi Over Savarkar Remarks
The Supreme Court of India on Friday (April 25) accepted Rahul Gandhi’s petition to quash a 2022 defamation case filed against him over his remarks on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The court, while granting relief, also warned Gandhi to refrain from making such irresponsible comments in the future.
Rahul Gandhi had approached the Supreme Court seeking to quash the summons issued against him in the case.
"You cannot make such statements without knowing the history or geography of freedom fighters," the court remarked sternly.
"If you make such a statement again, the court will take cognisance of it," the top court added.
The defamation case stems from a remark made by Gandhi in November 2022 during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in Akola, Maharashtra. At the time, the Congress leader had said that Savarkar was a "servant of the British" who received a pension from them.
The complaint alleged that Gandhi's remarks were deliberately insulting and part of a “well-planned conspiracy” to defame Savarkar.
