Early onset of Monsoon, Monsoon Likely to Hit Kerala in 4–5 Days: IMD, latest news:                      

The southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala in the next 4–5 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in an afternoon update.

The monsoon usually arrives on June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8. If it arrives within the next few days, it would be much earlier than its usual time.

“The conditions are likely to become favourable for monsoon onset over Kerala during the next 4–5 days,” the IMD wrote on X.

Further, as per its update, the conditions for the southwest monsoon are likely to become favourable for further advancement over parts of the South Arabian Sea, Kerala, and surrounding regions.

“The conditions are also likely to become favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon over some more parts of the South Arabian Sea, remaining parts of the Maldives and Comorin area; some parts of the Lakshadweep area, Kerala, Tamil Nadu; some more parts of the South & Central Bay of Bengal, the Northeast Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Northeastern states during the same period,” the IMD stated.

If the monsoon hits Kerala as forecasted, it will be the earliest onset in 16 years over the Indian mainland. In 2009, the monsoon began on May 23 — nine days ahead of its usual time — according to a report in The Hindu, citing IMD data.

Earlier, the IMD had forecast the onset of the monsoon over Kerala by May 27.
