IMD Issues Yellow Alerts Across Punjab; Red Alert for Gujarat Amid Dual Low-Pressure Systems
Latest Weather Updates: Chandigarh, June 17, 2025 —The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chandigarh has issued yellow alerts for most districts of Punjab, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and strong surface winds. In a few areas, heatwave conditions are also expected.
According to the IMD’s latest update:
Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) are under yellow alert for heavy rain, thunderstorm, lightning, squall, and strong surface wind.
Gurdaspur is the only district in Punjab where a heatwave warning has been issued along with thunderstorm, lightning, squall, and strong winds.
In 11 districts—Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali), Patiala, Mansa, Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Bathinda—the IMD has warned of thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and strong surface winds, though no heavy rain or heatwave is forecasted.
No warning has been issued for the remaining six districts of the state.
Temperature Trends
On June 17, the average temperature across Punjab saw a drop of 1.2°C compared to the previous day, bringing it close to normal levels.
Hisar recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the region at 22.9°C, as reported at 8:30 AM today.
It also received the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, recording 61.8 mm of rain.
On June 16, the average maximum temperature across Punjab fell by 1.7°C compared to June 15 and remained 3°C below normal.
Sirsa registered the highest maximum temperature in the region at 38.4°C.
Between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM, Balashmand (AWS), Hisar reported the highest rainfall of 13.5 mm.
Residents are advised to plan their day accordingly, considering the changing weather conditions.
National Update
At the national level, the IMD has reported the formation of two low-pressure areas-one over South Gujarat and its neighbourhood and another over Southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal.
Under the influence of these systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by severe thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over:
• Gujarat (with extremely heavy rainfall likely over Saurashtra and Kutch)
• Gangetic West Bengal
• Odisha
• Bihar
• Jharkhand
A red alert has been issued for Gujarat.
