Thousands of teaching positions remain unfilled in central government-run school systems, with the government acknowledging that vacancies continue to arise due to retirements, transfers and expansion of institutions.

Responding to a written question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary said efforts are ongoing to ensure that staffing gaps do not affect classroom learning in Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

He said the process of filling teaching posts is continuous and recruitment is carried out according to the provisions laid down in the relevant recruitment rules. Authorities aim to fill vacancies as quickly as possible so that students’ academic interests are protected.

To prevent disruption to the teaching-learning process, the institutions also appoint teachers on a temporary contractual basis whenever required. These arrangements are made until regular appointments are completed through the formal recruitment process.

Providing details to the House, the minister said more than 13,000 teaching posts are currently vacant in the two school systems. Of these, 8,618 vacancies are in Kendriya Vidyalayas, while 5,083 posts are vacant in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

Chaudhary explained that vacancies occur for several reasons, including the opening of new schools, retirement of teachers, resignations, promotions, transfers and movement of staff to other departments. Upgradation of schools can also create additional staffing requirements, leading to further vacancies in teaching positions.
