India’s aviation regulator and the Civil Aviation Ministry have taken steps to prevent a repeat of the large-scale flight disruptions experienced by IndiGo passengers in December, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Responding to supplementary questions during Question Hour, the minister said the disruptions occurred after pilots reached the limits set under Flight Duty Time Limitation rules, leading to a shortage of available crew for scheduled operations. As a result, hundreds of flights operated by IndiGo had to be cancelled during that period.

Naidu said the airline later reviewed its internal operations to better align crew scheduling with the duty time regulations and assess the number of additional pilots required to ensure smooth flight operations.

He also informed the House that IndiGo has strengthened its workforce in recent months. According to the minister, the airline has recruited more than 246 pilots over the past three months to improve operational readiness and avoid similar disruptions.

The cancellations had affected about 3.64 lakh passengers, the minister said. After verification of ticket details, compensation has been issued to affected customers.

Passengers were offered vouchers worth Rs 10,000 each or travel coupons as a goodwill measure. In total, compensation amounting to Rs 163.92 crore has been provided to passengers, while Rs 43.81 crore has already been distributed.

Naidu added that passengers who complete verification later may receive additional vouchers.
