Rain Brings Relief to Heatwave-Hit North India; IMD Predicts Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Over Several States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest updates stated that light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, is likely over Northwest India during June 15–21.
The IMD has also forecast thundersqualls (wind speeds reaching 50–60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph) over Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana on June 15, and over Rajasthan from June 15 to 17.
Meanwhile, isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Uttarakhand on June 15, with very heavy rainfall likely between June 16 and 21. Himachal Pradesh is also expected to receive heavy rainfall on June 20 and 21.
This change in weather comes as a major relief for North India, especially Rajasthan and Punjab, which have been experiencing severe heatwaves and warm nights over the past several days. Heatwave conditions also prevailed across the lower regions and plains of Himachal Pradesh.
The IMD had earlier predicted a shift in the weather pattern starting June 15, and as forecast, rain lashed multiple regions today, including Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and several parts of Northeast India.
Following the rainfall, tourists rushed to Haridwar, leading to massive traffic congestion in the region.
Traffic Circle Officer, Sanjay Chauhan, speaking to ANI, said, “Our entire force has been deployed to manage the situation. The traffic is moving slowly but steadily. I appeal to the public to park their vehicles in designated parking areas instead of leaving them in the middle of the road.”
The rains have brought much-needed respite from the scorching temperatures and are likely to benefit agriculture, water supply, and overall weather balance in the northern parts of the country.
