Southwest Monsoon Set to Advance Further; Above-Normal Rainfall Likely in India: IMD
Southwest Monsoon updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that conditions are favourable for the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon over several regions in the next few days. According to the latest IMD bulletin, the monsoon is expected to progress into parts of Gujarat, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha within the next 24 hours. It is also likely to extend into parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and East Uttar Pradesh over the subsequent three days.
The monsoon is currently in an active phase, with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at several locations, and extremely heavy rainfall (more than 20 cm) at isolated places over South Peninsular India and Konkan & Goa till June 16, 2025.
In a significant update, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that India is likely to receive more rainfall than usual this monsoon season.
“There is some good news for India. There is a possibility of more rain than usual. A long-period average rainfall is likely to occur. Normal rainfall is expected across various states, except in Northeast India, Ladakh, and adjoining areas, where below-normal rainfall is possible,” DG Mohapatra said.
He added that this rainfall trend will prove beneficial for the agriculture sector, water resource management, and the power industry, especially amid rising demand and climatic uncertainties.
