"Like Another Nirbhaya": Judge Pens Poem in Death Penalty Verdict for Child's Rape and Murder

A judge of a session court in Seoni Malwa, in Madhya Pradesh's Narmadapuram district, on Saturday, while awarding the death penalty to a man convicted of raping and murdering a six-year-old girl, wrote a poem in the judgment to express the agony and injustice endured by the child victim. The girl was kidnapped in her sleep on the night of January 2nd by Ajay Vadiba, the convict, who later raped and murdered her, as reported by TOI. The judge delivered the judgment within three months.

Tabassum Khan was the judge who wrote the poem,  currently serving as an Additional Sessions Judge at the District Court in Narmadapuram, Madhya Pradesh.

Speaking as the victim herself, Special Judge Tabsum Khan wrote, "Han, main hun Nirbhaya, phir ek Nirbhaya...," as TOI quoted the poem from the judgment.
The poem ends with, "Ek chhota sa prashn utha rahi hun, jo nari ka apman kare, kya woh mard ho sakta hai? (I have a small question: can one who insults women ever truly be a man?)"

The judge Tabsum Khan further wrote in the poem within the judgment, "He took me away in my sleep, like the dark shroud of death... I was alone and very scared... I sobbed and called out for my parents. I cried and screamed for help, but no one heard... He, too, was the father of three children, so why did he do this to me?"

During interrogation, he confessed to the crime. In a shocking revelation, he admitted to asking the victim’s father to exchange the victim for the convict’s son. However, the father dismissed it as a joke. According to the TOI report, she was taken to a remote area, where he raped and murdered her, and disposed of her body near a canal.
