Discussion on Key Legislation & Parliamentary History to Mark Upcoming Session

NEW-DELHI: The Central Government has released the 'provisional list' of the agenda for the special session of Parliament, scheduled to convene from September 18 to 22. In addition to commemorating the 75-year journey of the Parliament, the agenda includes the introduction of four bills, though it is subject to potential additions.

Among the key bills slated for discussion is the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Press and Periodicals Registration Bill, 2023, both to be introduced in the Lok Sabha. These bills had received approval in the Rajya Sabha on August 3. Additionally, the Post Office Bill, 2023, and the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service, and Tenure of Office) Bill, 2023, will be deliberated in the Rajya Sabha. Both of these bills were initially introduced in the Rajya Sabha on August 10.

According to the Parliamentary Bulletin, the inaugural day of the special session on September 18 will witness the Rajya Sabha engaging in a discussion reflecting on the achievements, experiences, memories, and lessons from the 75-year parliamentary journey, tracing back to the Constituent Assembly. Furthermore, discussions are anticipated on the golden era of freedom, alongside a proposal regarding the Chandrayaan-3 mission and the G-20 summit.

Significantly, The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariat had previously indicated that the special session would commence on September 18 and extend until September 22, keeping the government's operational needs in view. The regular session hours are expected to run from 11 am to 1 pm and resume from 2 pm to 6 pm. Sources from the Secretariat have confirmed that there will be no question-and-answer period and non-governmental activities in both Houses during this special session.
